China’s dangerous hesitation over reform

China remains in no-man’s land – policy restrained but reforms held back. Growth remains weak – the window for financial reform is closing. Financial pressures could soon slow growth sharply and heighten the reform imperative.

Our calculations show growth weakening. China's Q3 GDP data indicate that the authorities continue to exercise restraint. We don't yet have the full set of data for our re-calculation, but our preliminary estimates show real GDP in Q3 grew 1.5% on Q2, a good bit slower than the official print of 1.9%. Officially, the economy ticked down a touch in Q3 whereas our calculations point to a sharper deceleration.
